Patterns of Export Diversification in East Asian Economies
Using Different Levels of Data

Researchers argue that export diversification matters and is especially important for developing countries because many developing countries are often highly dependent on relatively few primary commodities for their export earnings. One of the objectives of this study is to investigate the differences in export diversification patterns in the selected East Asian countries using specific concentration index formula, at an internationally comparable disaggregated level. This study will thus examine the pattern of export specialization and the evolution of export diversification in China, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore and Thailand by using the concentration index at the SITC (rev 3) 3 digit level 1995-2009, covering all commodity data from UNCTAD, UNCTADstat. Considering the fact that some bilateral trade relations switch from zero to positive values is what diversification is about, this study will put emphasis on explaining and analyzing the trend and changes in the presence of many zeros in the trade matrix for the countries of interest by using disaggregated level data. For this study, the highest level of internationally comparable disaggregated country-level trade data is used, which is the 6-digit level of the Harmonized System (HS). It can be said from the study findings that all the countries under the study has diversified their export basket to some extent but at the same time they have not diversified enough within the categories. Moreover, they have concentration of export in some production stages like parts and components.

• It was a great opportunity to listen to academics from all around the world. The speakers not only presented their latest research but also discussed about the financial crisis and political situation of Greece and EU.
• I have presented my paper, "Patterns of export diversification in East Asian Economies using different levels of data". I have got constructive comments and useful feedback to improve my study in this regard.
• The paper I have presented is part of my PhD research and I have received publication offer from the Journal of Modern Accounting and Auditing.
• I have made a good network with other scholars from around the world which will give me the opportunity to share research results and further improve my study.
