Call for Participants

The Waseda University Global COE Program, the Global Institute for Asian Regional Integration (GIARI), is accepting applications from PhD students to attend the Joint Summer Institute on Europe-Asia: Comparative Regional Integration. The Institute will provide students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about regional integration in Europe and/or Asia and expand their research networks.

The Summer Institute encourages the application of PhD students conducting theoretical and empirical research on issues related to regional integration in Europe and/or Asia from various aspects, including but not limited to politics, security, human security, economics, sociology, culture, and environment. The Institute will provide a supportive environment where students can share their ideas, receive feedback on their research projects, and offer constructive and critical advice to other participants. The five-day program will also include advice on practical matters such as conducting fieldwork. The program will include a number of panels, providing students the opportunity to present their work with the aim to potentially publish the best papers in the Asian Regional Integration Review published by GIARI.

• The Summer Institute is open to all PhD students interested in European and/or Asian regional integration
• Number of students: 10 (5 students from Asian countries and 5 students from Waseda University)
• Fee and payment for those who apply from overseas universities: Airfare and accommodation expenses (six nights and seven days in Tokyo) will be covered by GIARI.

• Submit an application form as well as an abstract of the paper you will present at the Summer Institute.
• Deadline for the submission of necessary documents: May 31, 2011.
• The application form can be downloaded from the GIARI Web site. http://www.waseda-giari.jp
• The abstract should be a maximum of 250 words, including your name, affiliation, paper's title, and the subject category to which you are applying. Abstracts will be judged on strength and coherence of argument, originality, appropriate use of methodology, and knowledge of existing debates.
• The successful applicants should submit papers. The total word count of the paper should be 5,000~10,000 words. The paper will be passed to the professors before the start of the Summer Institute. The deadline for submitting the papers is July 20, 2010. The best papers will be considered for publication in Asian Regional Integration Review, Vol. 4 (2012), published by GIARI, Waseda University.

As a result of this program, have your ideas about regional integration in Asia changed? If so, how?

• All presentations have variety of academic discipline such as economic social science and politics. However, they have one common thing "regional integration". I was trying to analyse the regional integration with focused on only my field. Thought this program, I realise that considering other factors and approach method is important to understand the phenomenon of regional collaboration more clearly. (a participant in 2010)
• Regional integration process is multi-faceted, which span across political, economic, social and other aspects. This summer Institute allows me to see the process of regional integration from numerous other perspectives. I believe people to people and educational exchange are the keys to the process. I strongly commend GIARI's effort. (a participant in 2010)
• They have become more refined due to the lecture, presentations from different diplomas and approach. I think now have better grasp of the further and the greater picture of different aspects of Asian regional integration. • My understandings about regional integration in Asia have been collected progress knowledge at least in two ways:
  1. Deeper, more details about the theory of regional integration
  2. broader, more coverage into other disciplines or approaches.

• My interest in East Asian regionalism is quite new, so I learned a lot form the presentation and lectures. It was very useful to be able to grasp a comprehensive picture of the regional integration in Asia from very different dimensions of economics, culture, history, politics and the different academic approaches.
