Call for Participants

The Waseda University Global COE Program, the Global Institute for Asian Regional Integration (GIARI), is accepting applications from PhD students to attend the Summer Institute on Asian Regional Integration. The Institute will provide students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about regional integration in Asia and expand their research networks.

The Summer Institute encourages the application of PhD students conducting theoretical and empirical research on issues related to regional integration in Asia from various aspects, including but not limited to politics, security, human security, economics, sociology, culture, and environment. The Institute will provide a supportive environment where students can share their ideas, receive feedback on their research projects, and offer constructive and critical advice to other participants. The seven-day program will also include advice on practical matters such as conducting fieldwork. The program will include a number of panels, providing students the opportunity to present their work with the aim to potentially publish the best papers in the Asian Regional Integration Review published by GIARI.

Program contents

  • Lectures & Discussion (Aug 2 ,3 , 5, 6)
    Morning sessions: Lectures by leading professors on the subjects
    Afternoon sessions: Student presentations and discussions
  • Fieldtrips (Aug 4)
    Site visits to a government agency and a private company
  • Free day for research (Aug 7)

Call for Participants

  • The Summer Institute is open to all PhD students interested in Asian regional integration
  • Number of students: 20
  • Fee and payment for those who apply from overseas universities: Airfare and accommodation expenses (seven nights and eight days in Tokyo) will be covered by GIARI.


Application Procedure

  • Submit an application form as well as an abstract of the paper you will present at the Summer Institute.
  • Deadline for the submission of necessary documents: May 10, 2010.
  • The application form can be downloaded from the GIARI Web site.(http://www.waseda-giari.jp)
  • The abstract should be a maximum of 250 words, including your name, affiliation, paper's title, and the subject category to which you are applying. Abstracts will be judged on strength and coherence of argument, originality, appropriate use of methodology, and knowledge of existing debates.
  • The successful applicants should submit papers. The total word count of the paper should be 5,000~10,000 words. The paper will be passed to the professors before the start of the Summer Institute. The deadline for submitting the papers is July 19, 2009. The best papers will be considered for publication in Asian Regional Integration Review, Vol. 3 (2011), published by GIARI, Waseda University.
