Proposals are sought for paper presentations at the annual conference of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC) at Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, USA, on June 18-20, 2010. In order to be considered for this opportunity, the proposed paper must: (1) deal in a significant way with issues of Asian regional integration; (2) reflect existing key studies on the topic of the paper; (3) discuss the importance of the research question or hypothesis examined in academic/policy discussion on Asian regional integration; and (4) include references. ASPAC is one of the regional affiliates of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), USA, and encourages graduate students as well as more senior scholars to present their research on a disciplinary or multidisciplinary basis. ASPAC offers cash awards to the top graduate student papers presented at its annual conference. One of the Waseda University students who participated in 2009 received an award. Eligibility: Students in the Ph.D. program in the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies at Waseda University. Successful proposals will be included in panel proposals organized by Professor Tsuneo Akaha, Monterey Institute of International Studies and Visiting Professor, Waseda University Center for Asia Pacific Studies.

Interested students should submit the following information: (1) full name (First name first), student status at Waseda University (e.g., 1st year MA studnet); (2) contact information, including home address, phone/fax number, and e-mail address; (3) an abstract of the proposed paper (maximum 400 words). The abstract can state what the paper will attempt to do, including (a) a research question or hypothesis, why existing studies are inadequate or contradictory so that the proposed study contributes to the discussion of the issue, what data/information/methodology you plan to employ in addressing the issue, and what your central argument will likely be. Deadline: December 15, 2009. Submit the required information to Professor Akaha at takaha@miis.edu The proposal author will be notified of the results of the initial screening by January 15, 2010. Successful proposals will then be submitted to the ASPAC conference organizer shortly thereafter, with final notification expected by March 1, 2010.
